Fleet Week took a tragic turn early Thursday, as a Marine was struck by a car and killed while trying to cross a street on the West Side.

The 22-year-old Marine had just come into town on one of the boats arriving for the festivities Wednesday.

He has been identified as Steven Jorgenson, who was stationed aboard the U.S.S. Iwo Jima.

He was crossing 12th Avenue at 49th Street around 1 a.m. when he was hit. He was one of several people who had just gotten out of a cab and were attempting to cross the West Side Highway from the center median. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the silver Acura that hit him turned the car around and returned to the scene. He then called 911.

Officials are calling the incident a tragic accident. The driver is not facing any charges.
