NYC considers street sweepers with cameras

New York City wants to install cameras on some sanitation street sweepers to help capture license plates of illegally parked cars.

A bill before the state Legislature would give the city permission to mount the cameras on a limited number of sweepers that service routes in 25 of the city's 59 community districts.

The New York Times reports that the pilot program, if approved, would free sanitation and traffic enforcement officers to focus their time elsewhere.

The bill was introduced last month by Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos, a Long Island Republican.

It has not been introduced in the Assembly, and the Times say no one in the Senate has yet signed on to sponsor it.
