How to deal with kids who are picky eaters

NEW YORK

Mealtime at the Phillip's household was once fairly stress-free, but when youngest daughter Chloe came along, things changed. She's a picky eater.

"It was a challenge and did stress me out because my older one was such a good eater, I was not prepared for that behavior," said Mrs. Phillip's.

Dietitians Janice Bissex and Liz Weiss have written a children's cookbook with recipes such as coconut chicken fingers and pumpkin chocolate chip muffins. They offer tips on how to convert your picky eater.

"Get your kids involved in the menu planning, say what would you like to eat this week," said Bissex.

And let kids pick out one new vegetable at the store each week.

"And also when children are hungry, that's when you bring out the fruits and veggies, and they're more likely to say, wow, I really want that pear," adds Weiss.

Here are some common mistakes parents tend to make:

  • pushing vegetables too much
  • labeling kids as picky eaters
  • and becoming short order cooks by making one meal for adults and another for the kids.
