There's concern throughout a Port Chester neighborhood after the attempted sexual assault of an 8-year old girl in her bedroom. Police believe the suspect may have snuck in the middle of the night through a fire escape.

The incident happened early Monday morning. Police were called to an apartment around 2 a.m.

The girl told police she was awakened by the sound of a cigarette lighter and the smell of smoke.

According to police, a man in a green shirt was standing over the bed.

The suspect put his hands around the girl's neck and tried to pull down her pants. She screamed and the man ran out through the front door.

Responding officers to the scene found a man wearing a green shirt standing in front of the very building.

But that person said he was visiting people on the first floor.

Police say his alibi checked out and the victim was not able to positively identify him as the intruder.
