Police say 42-year-old Alvin Moore, of Sebring, Florida, broke multiple panes of glass on the exterior front doors of the Ed Sullivan Theater just before 1 a.m. Thursday.
He reportedly threw a red newspaper box at the front of the theater, causing the damage.
He attempted to get into the theater's lobby when a security guard stopped him and held him until police arrived.
The security guard reportedly had a golf club that Moore tried to take away from him. In the scuffle, the guard hit Moore with the club, and Moore sustained a laceration to the head.
He was treated at St. Luke's Hospital and released.
He is now facing criminal mischief and burglary charges.
The smashing attack was just four days after 22-year-old James Whittemore managed to break into the Ed Sullivan Theater Sunday morning. He later apologized for his drunken rampage.
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Moore, a would-be musician, was jealous of the publicity Whittmore received and thought this might help his career.
Moore has at least one prior arrest in Florida.
