Police say plain-clothed officers shot and wounded a 21-year-old man on Staten Island after he pointed a 9 mm handgun at them.

The officers saw someone fitting the description of a man reported to have a gun just after 2:30 p.m. Tuesday and began chasing him on foot near Winter Avenue and Jersey Street.

Police say the man pointed his gun at the officers and would not drop it when they identified themselves. An officer fired twice, striking the man in his right arm. The suspect dropped his gun and ran away. He was found later in a nearby vacant apartment.

The man, who was not identified by police, was taken to a hospital where he was in stable condition. Police say some crack cocaine was found.
