LIRR disruptions extend into Tuesday morning

NEW YORK

Service suspensions and delays continued to affect the Montauk and Babylon branches.

Service on the Babylon branch had been on and off all night, but one track has since been restored. The first train left at 6:15 a.m., and officials advised commuters to expect delays, cancellations and combined trains throughout the morning.

The Montauk branch remained completely suspended through the morning. Separately, a previously planned bridge replacement would have canceled LIRR service on the Montauk branch anyway, east of Speonk, for 48 hours beginning at 12:40 p.m. Buses will replace the trains.

Montauk service was being suspended to replace a damaged railroad bridge that spans Hill Station Road in Southampton. The bridge was damaged when a truck hit it on April 22. Since then, cars have been unable to travel under the bridge, while trains can only move slowly over it.

The weekday outage affected about 400 customers on the Montauk line, as compared to 3,400 on a typical Friday in the summer.

Earlier on Monday, lightning strikes on the railroad's signal system caused widespread delays on all lines.

At least two metal boxes holding electronic signal equipment were struck at critical junctures around 3:30 p.m. Monday. One was just east of Jamaica and the other was in Babylon.
