Public Service Electric & Gas officials say the problem occurred at about 5:30 a.m. Friday.
It left more than 700 homes and businesses without electricity for most of the day.
PSE&G crews spent much of the day repairing sections of underground cable. Service was restored around 6:15 p.m.
No injuries were reported, but the outage cut power to traffic lights.
Several streets were shut down, and some businesses closed early.
