A Washington Heights bodega is taking bold steps to go green.

Liberato Food Market has been in business for 35 years, but is now looking at the future.

The market no longer feels like your typical bodega. Gone are the crowded aisles and outdated equipment.

Specially insulated flooring has been installed and the refrigeration system has been replaced, saving 2,000 gallons of water each day.

The store now has a sparkling new meat counter that make food freshness and safety a priority.

Owner Jose Liberato is spending his own money for the improvements, but hopes to reap the benefits through tax credits and increased foot traffic.

Customers are giving it high marks.

LED lighting has been installed throughout, cutting total energy consumption by about 40 percent.

If the solar panel system is approved, Liberato's could be the most energy efficient bodega in the city.
