LIRR to test on-board credit card purchases

Starting Tuesday, some Long Island Rail Road passengers will be able to buy their tickets with credit cards while on the train.

Some conductors on trains between Ronkonkoma and Greenport will be able to process credit cards with wireless machines.

As with cash tickets bought onboard, riders will have to pay a fee if they had the option to purchase tickets at the station.

Railroad officials may expand the pilot program if it's successful.
