Two dead in Long Island house fire

Two residents died in a house fire in Southold Tuesday morning.

The fire broke out on Goose Creek Lane just before 5:30 a.m.

Firefighters tried to rescue the residents, but they were pushed back by heavy smoke and flames.

The victims have been identified as a 56-year-old woman and her 83-year-old mother. Authorities say there were no smoke detectors in the house.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
