Authorities say a New York City parking garage attendant suffered fatal injuries after accidentally depressing the accelerator instead of the brakes and backing into a metal stanchion.

Police say the accident occurred while 64-year-old Denuld Prophete of Brooklyn was retrieving a Ford Explorer from a parked spot at Edison Parking garage on West 44th Street in Manhattan around 11 p.m. Thursday.

They say Prophete accidentally left the car in reverse after he exited the car and it began to roll backward. He jumped back inside the car trying to stop it.

Police say he struck a stanchion for elevating vehicles.
