Rising star shot and killed in Morningside Heights

MORNINGSIDE HEIGHTS

Nicknamed "Chicken," Murphy was one of the top girls basketball players in New York City.

Colleges were lining up and the future was bright until she was shot and killed over the weekend.

Police responded to a 911 report of a shooting at 4:14 a.m. Sunday at the Grant Houses.

Murphy, a senior at Murry /*Bergtraum High School for Business Careers*/, was shot in the head.

Witnesses said Murphy was trying to outrun a gunman in a fourth floor hallway when she was shot.

Family members claim she was confronted by someone from a rival housing project who had an issue of some sort with her brother.

Witness said Murphy pleaded with the gunman, saying that she was not involved in the dispute, but he shot her in the head anyway.

"He shot three times and just left her there. Her mom was there and we saw her body in a pile of blood," her cousin Pierre Walton said.

Police told us that they are questioning several gang members, but no arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.
