Rumor leads to hurricane relief confusion in Newark

NEWARK

"My apartment flooded, the power went out, all our food spoiled," Tonya Green said.

"We really need it. We really lost power. The free food stamps will help," Aneesha Crowley said.

/*Essex County*/ is helping, signing people up for replacement /*food stamps*/. But the help is only for residents who are already in the food stamp program.

They also must have lost power for at least 4 hours.

The county says the majority of people showing up, don't qualify.

What happened? Twitter.

The county says a rumor spread on social networking that you would get free food or stamps and a 500 dollar gift card if you showed up at the stadium.

You can find threads of talk about the freebies, and the lines have been like this ever since.

The county is seeing as many people as possible; trying to filter thru to the most affected who qualify. Of the thousands who filled out the paperwork, only a few hundred may be eligible.
