But the soap was so much more than simply a TV show where love interests clashed, and Susan Lucci always had something snippy to say.
The show's creator, Agnes Nixon, was determined to use the show as a vehicle to address a long list of social issues, from war to the aids epidemic, interracial dating, homosexuality and abortion.
