Gunfire interrupted a quiet afternoon in Newark, leaving six people wounded.

Authorities said the shots rang out Monday afternoon at Stone and Crane Streets.

The shootings took place in the Kemsco Village housing complex, a series of two- and three-story brick houses separated by walkways in the city's northern section.

Witnesses said they heard between 15 and 20 shots.

"I just heard the gunshots, told my cousin to lock the door and duck for cover," said one man.

Four people were wounded. All of them were taken to area hospitals, but no information about their conditions was released. No fatalities were reported.

Residents said they had no idea what provoked the shooting.

Police remained on the scene trying to figure out what happened late Monday afternoon.
