Beginning on Sunday, Southampton Village will be implementing its ban on thin plastic bags.

The village board of trustees passed New York State's first plastic bag ban in April.

Village administrator Stephen Funsch told Newsday ( ) that the law prohibits the use of the so-called T-shirt bags, which are very thin and typically used in drugstores and groceries.

Heavier weight plastic bags are exempt from the ban.

Violators of the ban face fines of up to $1,000.
