Fire on Fire Island causes millions in damage

FIRE ISLAND PINES, N.Y.

Personnel from 28 local volunteer fire departments responded to the blaze Monday night in Fire Island Pines.

The fire started around 9:15 p.m. at the Pines Pavilion nightclub. Wind helped to spread the flames to a number of other buildings. It quickly burned through the wooden structures.

Officials say some fires were still burning midday Tuesday. Several businesses and at least two private homes have been damaged.

No injuries reported.

Brookhaven Town Supervisor Mark Lesko says two large structures housing nightclubs and restaurants were destroyed. Two houses caught fire from flying embers.

The property owners, FIP Ventures, did not immediately comment.

Arson squad was at the scene, although the cause or origin was unknown.

Fire Island Pines is one of many communities that dot the vacation hotspot south of Long Island.
