Rehab facility without power for 10 days

NEW YORK

For folks struggling to come back from injury and illness, they now face a new struggle.

The windows are dark at the Brookhaven Rehabilitation Center in Far Rockaway Tuesday night and it's not because the patients are asleep.

Power has been out for a week and a half.

The power went out 2 weekends ago when a transformer on the block exploded.

The Long Island Power Authority fixed the problem and across the street, there are plenty of lights ablaze.

LIPA says the delay here is because of the underground cable from the street to the health care center, a cable which is the facility's responsibility to fix.

Eyewitness News saw workers tackling the problem Tuesday night but patients want to know what took so long.

Backup generators are now providing power for the patients on machines and for the hallways.

Beyond that, they had had to learn how to survive without.

At mealtimes, for example, the workers apparently lined up in the stairwell and passed the trays upward.

The State Dept. of Health told Eyewitness News they will continue to monitor the facility's progress towards full power.
