LI war widow gets a helping hand at home

ISLIP TERRACE, N.Y.

Maricela Wahl was expecting members of the local American Legion post to fix her fence, but the American Legion wanted to do more to help the widow.

So with the help of United Way and Lowe's, a team of contractors showed up at Wahl's Islip Terrace home and started installing new siding, doors and windows and fixing up anything else that needed repairs.

"I don't have the words to explain the beautiful thing that they're doing for us, for me and my daughter, and all these people that have given their time. They don't even have to be here, but they're here. And that means so much. It's very overwhelming," Wahl said.

Wahl and her 11-year-old daughter also got a special visit from Santa who brought them a new bike, along with other gifts.
