DOE announces list of NYC school closures

NEW YORK

The Department of Education finalized the first part of its closures list Thursday and announced rest Friday.

There were 47 schools are under consideration, including 20 elementary and middle schools and 21 high schools. Half a dozen of them are charter schools.

Ninteen schools are now slated for closure, including Jane Addams High School For Academic Careers in the Bronx, where students were recently alleged to have gotten credits for classes they did not take.

Six other schools will lose their middle school grades, 6 through 8.

The 19 schools proposed for phase-out are:

  • General D. Chappie James Elementary School of Science
  • P.S. 014 Cornelius Vanderbilt
  • Legacy School For Integrated Studies
  • Manhattan Theatre Lab High School
  • Gateway School For Environmental Research and Technology
  • Jane Addams High School For Academic Careers
  • International Arts Business Schoo
  • Satellite Three
  • Middle School For The Arts
  • J.H.S. 296 The Anna Gonzalez Community School
  • Academy Of Business And Community Development
  • P.S. 022
  • P.S. 215 Lucretia Mott
  • Washington Irving High School
  • Samuel Gompers Career And Technical Education High School
  • Grace Dodge Career And Technical Education High School
  • Aspire Preparatory Middle School
  • Knowledge And Power Preparatory Academy VII

    The six schools proposed for middle school truncation are:

  • P.S. 161 The Crown
  • Academy For Scholarship And Entrepreneurship
  • Brooklyn Collegiate: A College Board School
  • P.S. 298 Dr. Betty Shabazz
  • Wadleigh Secondary School For The Performing Arts
  • Frederick Douglass Academy IV

    The remaining 16 schools that were engaged with but will not be proposing for phase out are:

  • P.S. 277
