Report: Subway crime up, transit officers down

December 20, 2011 3:22:59 PM PST
The MTA reports subway crime is surging, up 18 percent.

At the same time, subway cops are harder to find, with the number of officers down 10 percent.

The spike in crime is pegged to thieves targeting iPhones and other electronics.

Police say they've tried to blitz the subways in recent weeks with transit officers, but straphangers and MTA officials agree that the numbers are disturbing.
