Don't count on fruits and veggies to help you keep that New Year's resolution to lose weight.

A surprising new study finds people who eat a lot of fruit and vegetables are about as likely to gain weight as they age as people who don't.

The exceptions are smokers who drop pounds if they quit and eat a lot of fruits and vegetables.

Researchers are still trying to untangle cause and effect.

But they say you still need to eat your spinach and apples to ward off chronic diseases.
