Help for NYC chefs trying to cook up a small business

NEW YORK

But now there's a place in Queens, where aspiring restaurateurs can find the space they need to grow.

Hairnets and hats are required at The Entrepreneur Space in Long Island City, where small businesses come to rise and grow. There are four commercial-grade kitchens on site, open 24/7, to help small business owners get things off the ground.

Debra Brenner is the owner of Las Delicias, a bakery now selling its gluten-free goods at Zabar's."

"It's really helped me out a lot, because I can have the kitchen on a variable-cost basis," she said. "That means if my production increases or if my demand increases, I can just book other shifts. It's not more affordable if I had my own kitchen, depending on what market is, I would still have to pay fixed costs. Here is much more do-able."

The Entrepreneur Space also offers other support, like coaching and strategy tips.

"Not only are the ovens great and the equipment great, but (director Katherine Gregory) is great," Brenner said.
