Apps that help you diagnose your illness

NEW YORK

As winter weather paves the way for colds and flu, a dose of smartphone apps could be what you need.

A number of apps let you sort out your symptoms, like the fight the flu app for iPhone from biotech company Genentech.

The free app also lets users track flu activity nearby and by zip code, and search for pharmacies and urgent care.

But keep in mind that no matter how smart your smartphone is, it didn't go to medical school, so don't hesitate to see your doctor for professional advice.

Getting in the door at the doctor's office can be a challenge, especially when other flu-fighting patients are trying to do the same thing.

www.zocdoc.com has tried to cut the wait with their website. It lets users search doctors by specialty and insurance, and schedule an appointment online.

The zoc doc app for android, blackberry and iPhone makes most of the website features mobile, including reviews and recommendations of other patients, and a place to book and keep track of appointments.

It's free for you, but you can only find doctors who pay to participate in the program.
