Lunar New Year parade marks Year of the Dragon

CHINATOWN

The parade marks the Year of the Dragon.

The annual spectacle of floats, musicians, acrobats and giant dragons started on Mott Street, near Canal Street, and winded through Chinatown over several hours.

The new year began Monday.

In ancient times the dragon was a symbol reserved for the Chinese emperor, and it is considered to be an extremely auspicious sign.
