Brooklyn fire sends 7 to hospital

NEW YORK

It started on the 6th floor of a Bedford-Stuyvesant apartment building.

Investigators say a piece of furniture in the hallway caught fire, filling the 6th floor with smoke.

Residents on that floor were trapped because of the heat and smoke.

One resident heard another woman's cries for help.

"There was smoke coming from all up top of the roof and the lady was yelling out the window, 'Help! Help! Help! We're up here.' There was smoking coming out of her window and there's an elderly lady that lives there that's like 80-something, so she was trapped inside," eyewitness Andrea Hull said.

That woman was rescued from the apartment.

In all, seven people were transported to local hospitals for minor injuries including smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
