Nassau postpones vote on precinct closings

NASSAU COUNTY

Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano has reportedly delayed Monday's scheduled vote.

Deputy County Executive Rob Walker says the administration is negotiating with police unions on issues related to Mangano's police plan.

Mangano insists there would be no reduction in the number of patrol cars deployed throughout the county; currently 177 per shift.

He says the move will cut about 100 positions from the ranks and save about $20 million annually. The department had 2,380 officers and 1,234 civilians as of Jan. 1.

Union officials dispute the savings claim and warn of possible crime increases.
