Get around town with RelayRides.com

NEW YORK

How about renting your car, or renting some wheels from the guy down the street?

You can hit the road at RelayRides.com.

Via Skype, founder Shelby Clark told Eyewitness News he made $600 last month renting his mini cooper.

"For car owners it means you can make an average of $250 a month by renting out your car to your neighbors when you're not using it anyways, and for renters it means convenient, affordable access to transportation right in your neighborhood," Clark said.

Relay Rides provides a $1 million insurance policy that covers every reservation.

As soon as someone rents your car, Relay Rides' policy steps in with coverage.

If something happens to your car, your insurance policy won't be impacted.

"Your rates won't change, and it's only the Relay Rides policy that's on the hook," Clark said.

Car owners set the rental rate.

Relay Rides has a guideline; generally $8 an hour, $40 a day.

As far as gasoline, you need to replace what you use.

Relay Rides has been successful in San Francisco and Boston.

Now they're taking to the road, nationwide.

Car owners control who rents their car.

Relay Rides pulls records from the DMV and runs fraud identity theft detection checks using a credit card.

Relay Rides launched in 2010 and has raised about $13 million from investors like Google and General Motors.
