Charges dropped against teen beaten by police

NEW YORK

A defense lawyer says assault, drug and harassment charges stemming from the arrest of Jateik Reed were dismissed Wednesday. Prosecutors say the teen was still indicted on a robbery charge in a separate case. Reed has pleaded not guilty.

Four officers were stripped of their guns and badges after a video surfaced last month of them striking and kicking Reed as he was arrested in January. The Police Department is investigating the case.

The shaky amateur footage was posted anonymously. Reed's attorneys have called for an independent investigation because they feel the Bronx district attorney's office is too close to the police department to investigate brutality claims.
