Large brush fire in Staten Island

NEW YORK

The fire started at around 7:45 p.m. Thursday near Shelley and Watson Avenues.

Firefighters had broken the 4-alarm fire up into three different sections to help contain it.

They were able to put out the section of fire approaching homes on Simmons Lane first.

At around 9:20 p.m., the fire jumped a nearby creek and started to spread again.

The Fire Department was expected to be at the scene for some time, and eventually got the full fire under control.

There were traffic delays in the area as a result of the fire.
