Battle over military dog

ROCKLAND COUNTY

Marine Corporal Megan Leavey and her bomb-sniffing dog, Rex, survived an IED blast in Iraq in 2006.

Both were hurt and spent nearly a year rehabilitating together.

The military has denied Leavey's requests to adopt the 10-year-old German shepherd.

Now Senator Charles Schumer is trying to help.

"For Corporal Leavey and for Sergeant Rex, they both did great for us, they both were injured, praise God they both recovered, why can't they spend the rest of their time together?" Schumer said.

Leavey says Rex is in failing health and the military may put him down if he can no longer serve as a working dog.

The two completed more than 100 missions in Iraq together.
