Government unveils graphic anti-smoking campaign

WASHINGTON

The new federal campaign is designed to convince smokers they need to quit.

The ads, built on graphic, tragic stories from ex-smokers, begin airing Monday.

The Centers for Disease Control pressed for the campaign after it became clear that tobacco taxes and smoking bans have not budged the U.S. smoking rate in years.

The billboards and print, radio and TV ads show people whose smoking resulted in heart surgery, a tracheotomy, lost limbs or paralysis.
