Police say the woman was shot in the leg by officers responding to her apartment on Lasalle Avenue just before 10 a.m.
When responding officers arrived, the woman was reportedly stabbing herself with knives. The 42-year-old woman then lunged at officers while throwing the knives at them.
One officer opened fire, hitting the woman in the leg. She was being treated at Jacobi Hospital with non life threatening injuries.
The officer who fired was being treated for trauma.
