Long Island American Water customers will see a rate hike of more than 7 percent over the next three years.

The increases take effect April 1 for 200,000 customers. American water is the largest water supplier in Nassau County and services 31 communities in Hempstead.

The company's original proposal was for a one-time price hike of almost 20 percent.
