A rate hike is now in effect for Con Edison customers. The utility says most homes in New York City will see an increase of 2.5 percent in their monthly bills.

Bills for Westchester County residents will go up by a slightly higher percentage.

Medium-sized businesses should expect to pay about 2 percent more.

Con Ed officials say it is a smaller rate hike than what was called for in a plan approved in 2010.
