After a week of waiting, the doors opened at 8 a.m. and 500 applications were given out for 50 apprenticeships with Local 46, the Metallic Lathers and Reinforcing Ironworkers Union, in Woodside.
The union is offering a starting salary of $18 an hour and benefits to start. It is solid work in a soft economy.
"Waste of time being out here and not getting a job, but it's worth a try," job seeker Harold Andrews said. "Better than just being home, doing nothing, or getting that minimum wage check."
The line stakes all the way around the corner, with people braving the chilly temperatures for their chance at work. And they say if they end up with a job, it will all be worth it.
