Inside the 7 Line extension project

MIDTOWN

Michael Horodniceanu, president of MTA Capital Construction, gave Eyewitness News an exclusive look at work on this project.

"What we want to do is try to accelerate this so it will be done faster and people are moving," Horodniceanu said.

He watches work progress on this project, at some points more than 100 feet deep into bedrock, utilizing construction techniques never used before.

"The ground was not that good, so they had to freeze it to go through," he said.

The tunnels themselves are concrete panels bolted in place. There are massive challenges moving rock to make way for large banks of escalators and a new inclined elevator system. The mezzanine level of what will become the 34th street station is cavernous and the platform is expected to handle 35,000 riders during peak hours.

The 7 line extension is scheduled to be finished in December 2013.
