In a preliminary report, the fire was ruled as an arson, but the Suffolk County police department still says the cause of the April 9 fire has yet to be determined.
Harold Jantzen with the Suffolk County Major Crimes Bureau says police are still interviewing people who were near Brookhaven National Laboratory. That's where the fire started April 9th. Jantzen says it could be that someone just flicked a burning cigarette or it could be more than that.
The fast moving flames destroyed more than a thousand acres around Manorville.
More than 100 fire agencies responded to the blaze in the Ridge and Manorville area. One firefighter was hospitalized with minor burns. Two other firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation.
