Beer costs could go up unless Congress intervenes

NEW YORK

A New York state court last month struck down a tax exemption offered to in-state breweries to help them create jobs.

Senator Charles Schumer says that as a result, some small breweries could see costs go up by hundreds of thousands of dollars, which could end up passed onto drinkers.

Schumer is pushing what he calls the "beer act," which would cut in half the federal tax on small breweries nationwide.
