A 50-year-old man was shot and killed by police in Oakland Gardens, Queens, around 8:45 p.m. Thursday.

Police were called to 64-46 223rd Place because they were told a suicidal man was stabbing himself inside the apartment.

By the time officers arrived, the incident had reportedly spilled out into the courtyard, where they say Samuel Rivers was stabbing himself in the neck after slashing his wife in the neck and chest.

Police shot Rivers once in the chest after he refused to put down the knife.

The woman was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and was taken into surgery.

The shooting is under investigation.
