Student charged in deadly New Zealand crash

MASSAPEQUA

Stephen Houseman, of Massapequa, appeared in Auckland District Court Friday on three counts of careless driving causing death and four counts of careless driving causing injury.

Houseman is a 20-year-old Boston University student who drove a minivan in a crash that killed three classmates last week.

The dead students were identified as Daniela Lekhno, of Manalapan, N.J; Austin Brashears, of Huntington Beach, Calif.; and Roch Jauberty, of Paris, France. Junior Meg Theriault, 21, was seriously injured in the crash and remains in critical condition.

Boston University students studying abroad were traveling in three minivans to a volcanic crater last week when one of the minivans rolled.

Houseman was remanded without plea until his next appearance in June. He has been asked to surrender his passport while the case is pending.
