Caretaker attacked at Mahwah campground

MAHWAH

The caretaker, whose name was not released, is being treated at a hospital for a head wound.

Police Chief James Batelli tells The Record that around 9 p.m. Monday the caretaker at Camp Yaw Paw told two men riding an all-terrain vehicle there to leave.

Batelli says the caretaker heard the vehicle again minutes later and went to the door of his cabin, where the men confronted him. One struck him on the head with an object.

The caretaker told detectives he fired four rounds from his gun and that he thinks he struck one of his attackers. Area hospitals have been alerted.
