New Jersey Transit to hold hearings on bus cuts

NEWARK

The proposal calls for discontinuing five routes in Newark, Jersey City, Butler, Secaucus and Bloomfield and adjusting service on six other routes.

NJ Transit says those routes either suffer from low ridership or compete with train or light rail services.

The agency plans to spend more than $1 million in savings to create around the clock service between Newark, Newark Liberty International Airport and the Elizabeth Corridor.

Newark-Hillside Cross-town buses would be extended to the Branch Brook Park Newark Light Rail Station.

Tuesday's information session is scheduled for 11 a.m. and the hearing takes place at 5 p.m. at NJ Transit's Newark headquarters.
