Man charged with attacking Alzheimer's patient

NEW CASSEL

The family of David Martinez came to court to see for themselves the man who allegedly stomped on and beat the 68 year old man, leaving him in a coma for the rest of his life.

On April 28, Martinez, who suffers from Alzheimer's disease, wandered away from his Hicksville home and found himself two miles away on a block in New Cassel. That's where police say 23 year old Jose Bonilla robbed the man and then beat him so hard his dentures flew out of his head.

It took nearly a month for police to identify Martinez as he lay on life support at Nassau University Medical Center. All that time, his family was searching for him.

Police finally connected the dots. They say good detective work led them to Bonilla, who was arraigned on Friday. Bonilla is charged with first-degree robbery and first-degree assault.

His mom, Rosa, insists Bonilla is innocent. Working two jobs to support a son of his own, she claims he was at work on April 28th in Long Beach at the time of the beating

A judge remanded Bonilla without bail.
