Woman, 84, rescued from Huntington apartment fire

HUNTINGTON, L.I.

Suffolk County police say Officer Joseph Lanzisera broke a window to climb into the smoke-filled Huntington apartment around 9 p.m. Friday.

He found the woman in her bedroom in the Nathan Hale apartment complex, then navigated a smoke-choked hallway to open the locked front door and let a fire chief in.

The officer and Huntington Fire Chief Kenneth Cochrane carried the unresponsive woman outside.

Cochrane wasn't immediately available later Friday night.

Police say the woman has been hospitalized with burns to her face.

Lanzisera also was taken to a hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Police are investigating what caused the fire.
