Alec Baldwin and the photographer

June 19, 2012

Which fills the talented actor Alec Baldwin with more than a small douse of bitter irony.

With Baldwin, it's complicated.

Another dust-up today for Alec - this time outside the marriage license bureau, where he and his fiancé were this morning in Lower Manhattan. They weren't alone. Photographers were also there, and there was some sort of confrontation. The photographer for the Daily News says Baldwin attacked him. Baldwin's spokesman insists the actor was merely defending himself.

The picture in the paper is a freeze frame of a moment in time during the physical altercation, and while we don't know the context, it's clear Mr. Baldwin is angry.

Full disclosure - I like the guy. Before he moved to the southern part of the island of Manhattan, we used to take spin classes together. He works hard, sweats hard, and he's enormously funny and insightful.

But he is complicated, and, clearly, has a mighty temper to go with that mighty intellect.

I keep thinking about his on-again, off-again toying with running for office, especially Mayor of New York. Hard to do that, me thinks, if you don't like cameras in your face. And hard to imagine why a guy who makes his living in front of cameras, so dislikes them when he sees them on the street.

I'm just sayin'.

Tonight at 11, we'll have the latest reaction from both sides in this latest brouhaha involving Alec Baldwin and the paparazzi.

We're also following developments in Cairo, where Tahrir Square is once again filling with thousands of people - a scene that looks remarkably like the ones we saw when the revolution began earlier last year. We're told former President Hosni Mubarak has suffered either a heart attack or hemorrhage - this as millions of Egyptians are furious at the return of Mubarak's military.

One tweet goes like this: "Mubarak trying to upstage Egypt, again."

And Meteorologist Lee Goldberg tonight is tracking a hot hot hot system heading our way. Temps in the 90s tomorrow and Thursday, with record heat expected on the second day. Welcome to summer!

We'll also have any breaking news of the night, plus Rob Powers with the night's sports. I hope you can join Sade Baderinwa and me, tonight at 11.
