NYPD conducts fireworks amnesty program

NEW YORK

Commissioner Raymond Kelly urged people to bring their illegal fireworks to the 62nd Precinct in Brooklyn's Bensonhurst neighborhood on Saturday.

It was the NYPD's first-ever fireworks amnesty program.

The commissioner says it's an effort to prevent injuries during celebrations on Wednesday.

Kelly says no names or questions were asked, and no charges filed.

Fireworks are considered so dangerous that those brought in yesterday were immediately sealed in plastic and taken away by the bomb squad for disposal.
