Authorities say one man was killed and another wounded when shots rang out on a Newark street late Tuesday.

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray says the shootings occurred just before midnight in the area of Central Avenue and South 10th Street.

Police responding to reports of shots fired found 29-year-old Erving Munford of Newark and a 27-year-old man, whose name was not released. Both had been shot multiple times.

Munford was pronounced dead at a hospital a short time later, while the other man was hospitalized Wednesday in stable condition. Citing "safety concerns," Murray said further details on the wounded victim would not be disclosed.

A motive for the shootings remains under investigation.
