Grand jury clears officers in Newburgh police shooting

NEWBURGH

Police say officers were trying to serve an arrest warrant on Michael Lembhard in March when he ran into his sister's house and grabbed a kitchen knife. Officials say that two officers fired 16 rounds at Lembhard after he lunged at them with the knife.

Orange County District Attorney Frank Phillips announced Tuesday that a grand jury determined that no criminal charges be filed against officers Nicholas Cardinale and Eric Henderson.

Lembhard's relatives told the Times Herald-Record of Middletown (http://bit.ly/NnvQgm ) that the grand jury's decision backed up their belief that the district attorney's investigation was biased. Their lawyer said he expected to file a civil lawsuit soon.
